I’ve been writing for a long time…I didn’t realize how long, until I read through some old papers. I remember…as often was the case with me…getting a ninth grade English teacher that everyone thought was tough…they didn’t just think it…it was true…Mrs. Taylor didn’t play. That class frightened me before even getting to the class, to be honest. But, once classes started, I would find that Mrs. Taylor loved teaching English...I can see that now. She was passionate about teaching us and making sure that we ‘got it’ before moving on to the next grade. She had a kind heart, but there was no slacking in her class…much like the mother/teacher that I had at home.
I remember that when it was time for me to move on to high school, Mrs. Taylor wanted to put me in an advanced English class…my reaction was ‘what’…in my mind of course. I, respectfully, attempted to decline that offer and requested that I be put in a regular English class…that didn’t work with her or at home. So here, again, I was moved by what I was hearing about the level of difficulty of this advanced English class and would find that my worry was a waste of time.
As I look back, I realize that, even then, God was preparing me for this season of writing in my life. Thank God the adults in my life didn’t listen to me and that they insisted on playing the role that God gave them in my life. Sometimes we think we know, as children, but grow up to find that it’s not what we thought it was and certainly wasn’t what it looked like…and that’s a message for our youth…listening is powerful…
…Thank God for passionate teachers…they make a difference...
